Which baccarat bet should you make?
The banker hand, and the reason is printed in the rules rather than hidden in them. The banker acts last in every coup and its drawing rule takes the player's third card into account, so of the coups that are not ties the banker hand comes in slightly ahead. The 5% commission on a banker win exists precisely to claw that advantage back. A casino does not tax the weaker bet.

Two details in that table do the work. First, a tie is a push on player and banker, so those bets are never lost to a tie: they are handed back. Second, the tie payout is worth checking, because 9 to 1 returns $900 on a $100 bet where 8 to 1 returns $800, which is 12.5% more money for the identical wager at a table sitting in the same lobby.

What the 5% banker commission actually costs
Start with what the commission is not. It is not a fee on every banker bet: it is taken only out of winning ones, and it is calculated on the amount you win, not on the amount you staked. Lose a banker bet and you lose the stake, with no commission on top. That is why backing the banker is still the better of the two main bets after the 5% is paid.

Some tables advertise no commission at all, and those are worth reading twice rather than taking at face value. The usual arrangement is that banker wins are paid in full except when the banker wins with a total of 6, which is paid at half the stake instead. Rounds per hour is the number to watch
Cost is a percentage of turnover, and turnover is your stake multiplied by the number of coups you play. The drawing rules: why you make no decisions
Baccarat looks like a card game and plays like a coin toss with extra steps. Card values are simple: aces count 1, twos to nines count face value, tens and all face cards count zero. Only the last digit of a total counts, so a 7 and an 8 make 15, which is a 5. Read the bottom half of that table again and the whole game becomes clear. The banker's third card decision depends on what the player hand already drew, which is the structural edge that the commission is charging for. It also means there is no skill component: unlike blackjack, where the correct play changes with the dealer's upcard, baccarat hands play themselves and the only thing you control is which box the chips sit in and how often you place them.
